OUTRIDGES PATENT Rotary Steam Launch Engine
This is an extremely rare, vane type reversable steam engine of around 4 – 5 H.P. believed made to Outridges patent in the mid 1880’s.
Designed for small, high speed river launches, these rotaty engines were claimed to provide an excellent power to weight ratio and to achieve the then unheard of speed of 12 1/4 m.p.h!

Overall 29″ High x 10″ Long x 11″ Wide.
This is an extremely unusual, if not unique tandem compound marine steam engine, with reversing gear and integral boiler feed and air pumps. Throught to be by Simpson Strickland of Dartmouth, c1900. This engine is of an elegant design suitable for a small Thames type launch, and with it’s small footprint and low weight will provide an excellent power to weight/space ratio.

A very nice lightweight launch engine by the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of marine engine builders, Simpson Strickland of Dartmouth. Cross compound with slide valves and Stevenson link reversing gear, and provision integral boiler feed and air pumps. Cylinder covers complete with maker’s engraved caps. This small and elegant compound engine suitable for a medium sized river launch.
